The Limitation of a Single Life

William B. Riley (1861–1947) was a Baptist pastor whom many affectionally called the “grand old man of fundamentalism.” In 1923 Riley began during his Sunday morning messages Riley to preach through the entire Bible, subsequently publishing those sermons in a series titled, “The Bible of the Expositor and the Evangelist.”

In volume nine on the Psalms, Riley confessed how inadequate is the span of one life to plumb the depths of Scripture’s rich bounty:

Such is the limitation of a single life, that no man would ever satisfy himself or his readers with biblical exposition. The utmost that can be done is to touch certain mountain peaks, stop long enough to survey a few rich valleys, and feast beside some of the innumerable springs that characterize the sacred pages. The enforced statement of this fact makes one grieve that life is so limited, and hope that the great beyond will give us the true opportunity of Bible study.
