Indulging The Flesh Makes The Soul Sick

Prov 23:6-8 “ Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats: For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee. The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.”

When we allow the enticements and allurements of the world to govern our decisions, we will be drawn to the table of dainties and the house of the deceitful. While we may enjoy the sumptuous food and drink and the merriment of the moment, in the end we suffer from a sick soul.

One cannot indulge the flesh or join the world without affecting the state of the soul. While the flesh may rejoice and revel in all the material and physical bounty, the soul and spirit are sickened by the corruption and evil influence of the wicked.

May God help us to understand that the things of God and the things of this world do not mix. May we know that the soul must be fed with truth, right and good, if we want it to remain vibrant and healthy. If we feed it the corruption of the world we will be soul sick.

  1. Very good thought for the day. I think this should be extended to other areas of life and not just food and drink. We are absorbed into our culture in many ways…trends like clothing, hairstyles, material things, places we go… All of which, if we allow them to consume us, will make us sick.
